30
For example : Reduce in lowest terms.
                                36
                Solution : 30 and 36 have three common factors : 2, 3 and 6.
So 6 is the highest common factor.
                Therefore, 30 ÷ 6 = 5
                                    36 ÷ 6 6

Converting improper fraction into mixed fraction

                                      Note

Fractions with the numerator either equal to or greater than the denominator are
called improper fraction. (Numerator = denominator or , Numerator > denominator)

                                17 23 47
Fractions like , , etc. are improper fractions.
                                 6 8 11

To convert a improper fraction into a mixed fraction :

             I. We divide numerator by denominator of the fraction

II. Find the quotient and remainder.
                                                               quotient
                                                      17 ¯ 5 ¬ remainder
III. Then will write this form = = 2
                                                       6 6

An improper fractions can be always be converted into a mixed fraction.

             Addition and Subtraction of Fractions

Like fractions are fractions with the same denominator. We can add and subtract

like fractions easily. Simply add or subtract the numerators and write the sum
             over the common denominator.

                        1 3
             To add and
                        5 5

Since 5 is a common denominator ; we write it as denominator and add the
             numerators.

                                                      +
                                          1 3 ( 1 3) 4
                                            + = =
                                          5 5 5 5

                                           3 1
Similarly, to subtract from ; We write 5 as denominator and subtract the
                                           5 5
             numerators.

                                                       -
                                          3 1 ( 3 1) 2
                                             - = =
                                          5 5 5 5
