Example : The wind was blowing hard and the sea was rough.
If we split these two sentences by removing ‘and’, we will have two
independent sentences, each with a complete meaning :
• The wind was blowing hard.
• The sea was rough.
3. Complex Sentence
A sentence that has a main clause and a subordinate clause is called a
complex sentence.
The main clause and the subordinate clause are joined together by subordinating

conjunctions such as when , , unless , before , after , because , as , that , than .

Example : People who speak ill of others do not command respect in the
society.
We use complex sentences when we want to provide more information to
support our point.
In the above sentence, people do not command respect in the society is the
main clause and who speak ill of others is the subordinate clause.
B. Read the following sentences and state what kind they are – simple, compound or
complex sentences : Analyse
1. Geeta read a newspaper and Sita saw television.
2. Shyam ran very fast.
3. Mobile phone works fast just like a computer.
4. The athlete threw the disc very far and he won a medal.
5. The eagle flew very fast but could not catch the mouse.
6. Marina climbed the mountain to find different flowers.
7. I don't want to practise playing the guitar, but I don't want to disobey my
mother.
8. She found her folder where she had left it.
9. Because the curry was too cold. I heated it in the microwave.
10. The art gallery has closed for the day, but it will open tomorrow.
