Subtraction with Borrowing

Let us learn to subtract by borrowing.

                 To subtract 28 from 64.

T O First we subtract digits in ones column.
                        6 4 Here 4 < 8

                     – 2 8
                                     So what should we do?

                        T O
We borrow 1 ten from tens column. So 4
                        6 1 4 becomes 14.

                     – 2 8 Then 14 – 8 = 6
                              6

                        T O
Because we borrow 1 from Tens number 6.
                     5 6 1 4 So it remains 5.

                     – 2 8 Now 5 – 2 = 3
                        3 6 Therefore, 64 – 28 = 36

Subtract the following by borrowing method. One is done

                  for you

                        T O T O T O T O

                      7 8 1 4 4 8 2 5 3
                           1
                    – 2 3 – 2 5 – 5 9 – 2 6

                        5 8

                        T O T O T O T O
                        8 4 5 5 3 2 3 8

                    – 6 7 – 3 8 – 1 4 – 1 9
