Addition
We have already learnt about addition of 3-digit numbers
and 4-digit numbers in previous class.
We know that
R The numbers that to be added are called addends.
R The total obtained after addition of the numbers is called the sum.
To refresh our knowledge lets add 4793 and 3289. Write these number in
column and add.
Th H T O
1 1 1
4 7 9 3 ® Addends
3 2 8 9 ® Addends
8 0 8 2 ® Sum
First add ones 3 + 9 = 12 ones = 10 ones (1 ten) + 2 ones.
Carry ones 1 ten. Now add tens 1 (carry over) + 9 + 8 = 18 tens
= 10 tens (1 hundred) + 8 tens.
Add hundreds 1 (carry over) + 7 + 2 = 10 hundreds = 1 thousand.
Add thousands 1 (carry over) + 4 + 3 = 8 thousands.
So, answer is = 8082
Addition of 5-digit and 6-digit Numbers without carry over
Example 1 :Add 12034 and 43215.
Solution : Write the numbers in columns. TTh Th H T O
First Add ones 4 + 5 = 9 1 2 0 3 4
Add tens 3 + 1 = 4 + 4 3 2 1 5
Add hundreds 0 + 2 = 2 5 5 2 4 9
Add thousands 2 + 3 = 5
Add ten thousands 1 + 4 = 5
So, Sum is 55249
