Mixed fractions can be written as decimal as shown below :

                      4 134 36 236 284 7284
                  13    =        =  13.4,      2       =       =  2.36,      7        =         = 7.284

                                                   Place value of Decimals

The value of each digit in a number depends upon the place it holds (occupies) on
             the place value chart.

Let us take some example of decimal numbers and the place value of the digits in
             the number.

Example 1 : Write place values of each digit : 172.3 Example 2 : Write place values of each digit : 368.004
                                             3 4
                 1 7 2 . 3 3 tenths or 3 6 8 . 0 0 4 4 thousandths or
                                             10 1000
                                2 ones or 2 0 hundredths 0
                                7 tens or 70 0 tenths or 0

                                1 hundred or 100 8 ones or 8
                                                                                      6 tens or 60
                                                                                      3 hundred or 300

                                                Expended form of decimals

                Example 3 :

              (a) 473.2 = 4 hun dreds + 7 tens + 3 ones + 2 tenths
                                                2
                             = 400 + 70 + 3 +
                                                10
              (b) 5436.74 = 5 thou sands + 4 hun dreds + 3 tens + 6 ones + 7 tenths + 4 hun dredths
                                                         7 4
                             = 5000 + 400 + 30 + 6 + +
                                                         10 100
              (c) 8479.105 = 8 thou sands + 4 hun dreds + 7 tens + 9 ones + 1 tenths + 0 hun dredths + 5 thou sandths
                                                          1 0 5
                             = 8000 + 400 + 70 + 9 + + +
                                                         10 100 1000

A decimal number can be expanded in three ways – place value form, decimal

             form and fraction from.

From example, we can expand 8.57 as follows.

             1. Place value form: 8.57 = 8 ones + 5 tenths + 7 hundredths
