Rule for rounding to the nearest 100
Look at the number in the ten’s place.
For 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4 we round down.
For 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 we round up.
To round numbers to the nearest hundred make the numbers that end in 1 through
49 into next the lower number that ends in 00. For example 6897424 rounded to the
nearest hundred would be 6897400.
Numbers that have the last two digits of 50 or should be rounded up to the next
even hundred. The number 5698788 rounded to the nearest hundred would be
5698800.
Rule for rounding to the nearest 1000
Look at the number in the hundred place.
For 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4 we round down.
For 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 we round up.
To round numbers to the nearest thousand make the numbers whose last three
digits are 001 through 499 into the next lower number that ends in 000. For
example, 2796424 rounded to the nearest thousand is 2796000.
Numbers that have the last three digits of 500 or more should be rounded up to
the next even thousand. The number 1568788 rounded to the nearest thousand
is 1569000.
