P. 13
case of IV, I is written to the left of V. It means that 1 should be subtracted
from 5. Hence, its value is 4.
For example : VI = 5 + 1 = 6 XII = 10 + 1 + 1 = 12 LX = 50 + 10 + = 60
IV = 5 – 1 = 4 IX = 10 – 1 = 9 XC = 100 – 10 = 90
8 The symbols V, L and D are never written to the left of a symbol of greater
value, so V, L and D are never subtracted. For example, we write 15 as XV
and not VXX.
8 The symbol I can be subtracted from V and X only. For example, the value of
IV is four and the value of IX is nine.
8 The symbol X can be subtracted from L, M and C only. For example, X is
subtracted from L to get 40, which is represented by XL.
8 If a symbol of smaller value is written between the symbols of greater value,
then its value is subtracted from the symbol of the greater value which is
written immediately after the symbol of the smaller value. For example the
value of XIV is 10 + (5 – 1) i.e. 14 and LIV = 50 + ( 5 – 1) = 54
8 If bar is written over a symbol, it's value gets multiplied by 1000. For
example, the value of V is 5 × 1000 i.e. 5000.
Convert 7846 to Roman Numerals.
Example 6 :
Solution : = 7000 + 800 + 40 + 6
VMM DCCC XL VI
= VMMDCCCXLVI
Example 7 : Convert VMMM, DXXVI to Hindu Arabic Number System.
VMMM D XX VI
Solution : = 5000 + 1000 + 1000 + 1000 500 10 + 10 5 + 1
= 8526
Note
Remember
90 is XC and not LXXXX To change into Roman numerals, change the tens
(not more than 3Xs together)
and ones separately.
80 is LXXX and not XXC 62 = 60 and 2
(You can subtracts only once from a numeral)
LXII LX II
